- Provide you with clear, thorough education for your long term success.
- Ensure that every aspect of your health is considered before putting your body under the stress that comes with any surgical procedure.
- Prepare your mind and body for surgery. The better prepared, the faster you will recover and the more comfortable you will be along the way.

Comprehensive Tests & Evaluations
These tests are conducted to ensure that your mind and body are in the best possible condition to withstand surgery, and to anticipate any avoidable complications. The following are required in order to schedule your surgery:
Psychological Evaluation
During this session we will consider active psychosis, alcohol/substance abuse and mental illness. We will discuss social & family situation and support systems. We will also review alternative plans in the event that you are not a candidate for surgery. In general, we will explore whether you are ready at this time to commit to the work of becoming a healthier you.
Dietician Evaluation
Our Dietician will record your weight and height, and review your medical status and health issues. Together you will review your prior weight loss attempts, your expectations for your recovery, and your willingness to follow the NWH post-operative program. Your Dietician will be with you every step of the way from consult to long after surgery.
Upper Gastrointestinal Testing (UGI)
During this test you will consume barium contrast with water orally. Your surgeon will be able to follow the barium as it makes its way through your esophagus, stomach and the first part of your small intestine called the duodenum. We will be taking X-ray images to record the findings for your surgeon to review with you.
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)
This test examines the lining of the esophagus, stomach and upper duodenum with a small camera inserted down the throat. You will be provided a numbing spray that will help your throat relax and ease the process. You can expect little or no pain during this test.
Chest X-Ray (CXR)
X-rays of your chest will scan your heart, lungs, airway, blood vessels and lymph nodes.
Electrocardiogram (EKG)
This test will check for any problems in the electrical activity of your heart. An EKG translates the heart’s electrical activity into line tracings on paper. The spikes and dips in the line tracings are called waves.
