Am I a Candidate?
To be a candidate for weight loss surgery at NWH, our patients must meet these criteria:
- A BMI of 40 or higher; OR
- A BMI of 35 may qualify if an additional high-risk medical condition exists, and is caused or worsened by obesity
Calculate your BMI
In addition, our patients meet with our team of bariatric experts to be qualified in the following areas:
- Because surgery is a very serious undertaking, candidates must have tried non-surgical treatments such as dietary programs, behavioral modification, and exercise.
- There must be no underlying medical or hormonal cause for obesity. Such conditions are rare, and require treatment of the root cause.
- A candidate must participate in our comprehensive patient education, and become fully informed about the surgical procedure and what can be expected, both as to weight loss and possible complications.
- A candidate must demonstrate a willingness to accept the risks of surgery and to make dramatic lifelong changes in his/her lifestyle, dietary habits, exercise, and to commit to medical follow-up.
